El Salvador’s coastline stretches over 300 kilometers, and every stretch has its own personality. Here’s a quick guide based on what you’re looking for.

Surfers: From Punta Roca to Mizata

This stretch of coast holds the best waves in the country. Punta Roca, in La Libertad, is one of the most challenging and internationally known. El Zonte and El Sunzal offer options for every level, and Mizata closes out the route with a more solitary wave for those looking to surf without the crowds. World surfing championships are held here every year.

Families: San Blas, Costa del Sol and El Zonte

Communities with a family friendly atmosphere and plenty of space to relax. San Blas and Costa del Sol have a calm pace, ideal for spending the day as a group, while El Zonte combines beach with a walkable town, cafes, and options for all ages.

Couples: Mizata, Punta Mango and El Espino

Three options for disconnecting as a couple. Mizata has cliffs and dramatic volcanic sand, Punta Mango is more remote and exclusive, and El Espino offers quiet sunsets and a more natural setting.

Fishing: La Unión (Gulf of Fonseca) and Costa del Sol

The Gulf of Fonseca, in La Unión, is a traditional fishing area with boat trips out to several islands. Costa del Sol also offers good options for those who want to combine beach time with a day of fishing.

Adventure: Barra de Santiago

Mangroves, biodiversity, and a different rhythm from the rest of the coast. Ideal if you’re looking for kayaking, birdwatching, or simply exploring something outside the typical beach route.

Snorkeling: Los Cóbanos

The most important coral reef in the country. Clear, calm water for seeing tropical fish, and in season (December through March) even humpback whales passing offshore.

Nightlife: El Tunco

The most social spot on the coast, with restaurants, bars, and live music. Walkable to El Sunzal, so you can surf during the day and stay out late without changing hotels.
