Most of what goes wrong on a trip traces back to a booking decision made weeks earlier, usually in a hurry. Here’s what we see most often, and how to skip it.
1. Booking based on photos alone
A wide-angle lens makes a small room look like a suite. Before you commit, don’t just count the rooms—check the square footage. If a listing only shows sunset shots and no interior angles of the bathroom or kitchen, ask for them. Hosts who have nothing to hide will send them without hesitation.
2. Ignoring the actual distance to the beach
“Steps from the beach” gets used loosely. Some properties are a two-minute walk down a sand path. Others are a fifteen-minute walk down a hill you’ll have to climb back up in the heat, with your board under one arm. Ask for the exact walking time, not the listing’s version of it, and factor in whether that walk is flat, stepped, or unpaved.
3. Not asking about road access
La Libertad’s coastal road is beautiful and, in places, rough. Some rentals sit down dirt tracks that a regular sedan won’t love after rain. If you’re renting a car, ask directly whether the access road is paved and whether 4×4 is recommended. This one detail changes what car you book.
4. Overlooking who else is on the property
A lot of coastal rentals share land with other units, a restaurant, or a pool used by day guests. If quiet matters to you, ask what else operates on the same property and at what hours. If a lively shared space is what you want, ask that too. Neither is wrong, but you want to know which one you’re getting.
5. Skipping the WiFi and power question
Power along the coast is generally reliable, but not universal, and WiFi speed varies a lot property to property. If you need to work during your trip, ask for the actual megabit speed, not just “yes, we have WiFi.” A rental with strong signal and stable power is a different trip than one without.
6. Booking without checking cancellation terms
Weather on this coast can shift plans, and so can flights. Read the cancellation policy before you book, not after something changes. Some hosts are flexible with advance notice; others hold firm. Knowing which one you’re dealing with removes a stress you don’t need on vacation.
7. Not confirming what’s actually included
Towels, drinking water, coffee, a working blender for the mornings you’ll want a smoothie after a surf session — these details aren’t always listed. A quick message before booking, asking what’s stocked and what you should bring, saves a supply run on day one.
None of these mistakes are dramatic. They’re just the small gaps between what a listing implies and what a property actually offers. A few direct questions before you book close that gap completely, and set up the rest of the trip to feel exactly like the version you pictured.
